A default folder is where your new canvases go when you create one without choosing a place. With none set, they land in My Work. Your defaults are your own: teammates choose theirs. The liveworkspace index keeps them for your account or guest identity, so they follow you to any browser, and it files each new canvas by them.
Setting a default from a folder
Open a folder's menu (its ⋯ button, or right-click the folder) and choose Use as Default for…. Under New canvases that open as, tick what this folder should collect:
- Canvases: every new canvas that no more specific entry claims.
- Diagrams, Whiteboards or Sessions: new canvases that open in that mode.
- Event Storming boards: new canvases whose first tab is an Event Storming board.
- Retrospective canvases: new canvases made from a Retrospective template.
Each entry points at one folder, so ticking it here moves it from wherever it was; unticking it sends those canvases back to My Work. One folder can hold several entries.
My Work has the same menu: a ticked entry there means those canvases land in My Work. Choosing it when unticked clears that default.
You can use a team's folders too, as long as you are a member of the team. A team's own top level cannot be a default: create inside the team to put a canvas there.
Seeing your defaults
A default folder shows a small mark after its name, in the sidebar, the Explorer's lists and cards, and the editor's Explorer panel. Hover it to read what it collects, such as "Default folder for new canvases and whiteboards".
When you create a canvas
New Canvas never asks where a canvas goes: it is filed in the default folder for the most specific entry that has one (its kind, then its template, then its mode, then Canvases), or in My Work when none does.
- Starting from inside a folder or a team keeps you there: that folder wins over your defaults.
- A template picked on a new canvas's start screen counts too: pick a Retrospective template on a canvas you just made, and the canvas goes to the Retrospective canvases default folder (or your Canvases default), with a note saying where. A canvas you made inside a folder stays there.
- To file one canvas somewhere else, use Change Folder on it afterwards.
- As a guest it works the same way, and your folders and defaults move to your account when you sign in.
In Settings
Settings > Canvases > Default Folders (Where New Canvases Go) shows the folder each entry sends new canvases to, or My Work. Change picks a folder; Clear sends those canvases back to My Work.
If a default folder has been deleted, or belongs to a team you have left, the row says "A folder you can no longer reach", with where those canvases go instead: your Canvases default folder, or My Work. Deleting a folder that is one of your defaults warns you first.
Defaults only decide where a new canvas starts. Moving a canvas later, or changing a default, never moves canvases you already have.
